History, which looks reality in the face, and memory, which represents the past by extrapolation, are the essence of this photographic journey that Massimo Siragusa gives us by walking the paths of war in Sicily. Places steeped in anxiety but also of extraordinary landscape and visual beauty, pervaded by sounds that reach us from afar and that Michele Spadaro, with his sound work, returns to the present through an aural mapping, a sensorial exploration of times gone by full of curiosity but even more of anxiety of the present time. The whole fragments oblivion. Time and history are filled with imagination, in the constant dialogue between the artist and the world around him.
The sound work explores the acoustic consequences of reverberation within a particular location, the WWII bunkers located along the south-eastern coast of Sicily. This is achieved using an approach known as impulse response measurement, which allows the development of a map of the acoustic performance of a location, which can then be used statistically, or as in the case of this research, to digitally recreate the effect of sound at a given position in space. These measurements are then used to recreate two different, yet antithetical, sound scenarios that occur in the same location: the original one, which aims to depict the dramatic acoustics due to the primary use of the space; and the contemporary one, which expresses an acoustic experience that persists in opposite conditions. Therefore, the final aim is to make the listener perceive the peculiar acoustics of these structures and contemplate how sound can describe the drastic change in the perception of the same space in different time frames.
